Train like you are competing, compete like you are training

Just because you are riding at a competition doesn't mean all of a sudden you don't correct your horse if he does something wrong or ignores your aids. But you also should not ask more of him that you normally would. Also if you're 'just' training it wont do any harm to pretend you are at a competition. If you ride them the same every time mostly they should give you the same ride. If you need to do something new to the horse a competition is not the place to do it.
